AgSense was created in March of 2003 to collect data from a source, store it so that the data could be used at a later time and to save a producer a considerable amount of time every day.   As cellular coverage has improved greatly over the last 5-7 years it has allowed AgSense to be able to collect soil moisture data every day and throw the data to Wagnet.net so that the user can graph the data and make a decision on when to water.

TJ Watersense uses AgSense telemetry to collect soil moisture data from watermark sensors, and just about any capacitance probe in the market today.  The data is collected every half an hour and is reported to a server.  The farmer can then choose what data he wants to look at and how he looks at the data.  Click on Wagnet to go to the website to get more info about AgSense, and Wagnet.

TJ Watersense installs the probes and connects the AgSense telemetry to the sensors.  We then keep track of how the units are reporting and how they are collecting the data.  The farmer is responsible for reading the graphs and making a decision about irrigating or not.  We will give guidance on what we see, but ultimately it is the farmers call.  At the end of the fall we come out and remove the units along with the probes so that you can harvest your crop.  In the winter months we clean the probes and fix any issues we may have with the telemetry so that everything is ready for the next summer.

Commonly we would use at least one unit per pivot.  On our farm we actually use two per pivot and we are seeing a huge benefit.  We figured out the cost of irrigating, plus cost of interest and depreciation and found out the every inch of water applied was costing about $850.  We believe that on our farm the timing of the water application, how much water we applied, knowing how deep the water is going,  and knowing when to stop irrigating has saved us $2000-3000 per pivot.  This doesn’t include the saving of a natural resource either and the peace of mind of knowing that I am good on moisture.  Not sure what price you put on that.
